The Hindenburg

If you’re into George C. Scott like I am, you’re going to love this movie!
“One gasbag meets another” is how critic Pauline Kael described the “flatulent seriousness” that director Robert Wise brought to this 1975 thriller about the ill-fated German zeppelin which exploded while landing in New Jersey in 1937. The great air disaster is speculatively depicted here as an act of sabotage, and the airship’s trans-Atlantic journey gives the saboteur’s plot plenty of time to unfold while the story introduces a variety of characters aboard for the luxurious flight. While the anti-Nazi message is delivered loud and clear, Anne Bancroft and George C. Scott lead an illustrious cast in what amounts to a pre-World War II episode of The Love Blimp, only there’s not much romance and precious little suspense. It’s all rather flatly intriguing, but aviation buffs will certainly appreciate the meticulous attention to period detail, and the film won special achievement Oscars for its impressive sound and visual effects. Worth a look, if you’re a student of this particular chapter of history, and the movie earns some credit for having at least the kernel of a good idea. –Jeff Shannon

Basically it’s about:
Bert Glennon, who shot Stagecoach and seven other John Ford classics, has given this Raoul Walsh biopic of George Armstrong Custer a burnished glow–an evocative interplay of raw sunlight and elegiac shadow like no other vintage Warner Bros. Western. Glennon’s artistry and Walsh’s trademark gusto sustain enthusiasm even as the screenplay beggars belief. The flamboyant Custer (Errol Flynn), rushed into Civil War service straight from West Point, did get promoted overnight to general and establish a spectacular record for “ride to the guns” leadership. However, Custer as defender of Indians’ rights–to the point of willing his own Last Stand so he could accuse corrupt Indian Commissioners from the grave–is historical rewrite of such sweeping chutzpah as to shame DeMille. Flynn and Olivia de Havilland make an even more appealing couple than usual, and the big supporting cast is unflaggingly energetic above and beyond the call of duty. –Richard T. Jameson

After the success of Jurassic Park in 1993, the floodgates opened for digital special effects, and Jumanji is nothing if not a showcase for computer-generated creepiness guaranteed to give young children a nightmare or two. Whether that was the filmmakers’ intention is up for debate, since this is a PG-rated adventure revolving around a mysterious board game that unleashes a terrifying jungle world upon its players, including gigantic spiders, huge mosquitoes, a stampede of rhinos, elephants, and every other jungle beast you can imagine. Robin Williams plays a man-child who’s been trapped in the world of “Jumanji” for 26 years until he’s freed by two kids who’ve discovered the game and released its parade of dangerous horrors. A chaotic and misguided attempt at family entertainment, the movie does offer a few good laughs, and the effects are frequntly impressive, if not entirely convincing to the eye. –Jeff Shannon
