This 1993 sequl to the St. Bernard hit finds big, fluffy Beethoven now at home with gruff-but-lovable dad Charles Grodin, supermom Bonnie Hunt, and their three kids. The story continus with Beethoven falling for a female St. Bernard and having a litter, unbeknownst to Grodin, while the new dog’s owner (Debi Mazar) starts angling for benefits from this union. The larger dog pool certainly adds more cuteness and laughs to this follow-up, and Grodin and Hunt–consummate professionals–don’t let sequl-itis lower their energy or their wonderfully idiosyncratic way with dialogu. Mazar brings her own edge to the proceedings, too, but in the end, the film’s accent is still very much on a feel-good experience for everyone. –Tom Keogh

This is a great movie with Maurice Chevalier, Jeanette MacDonald, Charles Ruggles, Charles Butterworth, Myrna Loy

Basically it’s about:
The best movie musical you’ve never heard of is Love Me Tonight, a deliciously clever 1932 Rodgers and Hart romp. The film opens with a tour de force, as the rhythmic sounds of a Paris morning morph into music and we meet a humble tailor (Maurice Chevalier) whose future looks bright. At least he thinks so. And then the great song “Isn’t It Romantic?” kicks in, introduced by Chevalier but immediately handed off to client, cab driver, and a series of tune-carriers who finally bring the catchy melody to a dreamy princess (Jeannette MacDonald). It’s probably the giddiest sequnce in a very fun film, and “Isn’t It Romantic?” would continu popping up in Paramount movies for years (Billy Wilder was especially partial to it). The humble tailor must travel to the princess’s chateau to collect a bill from family playboy Charlie Ruggles, which puts Chevalier in pleasant proximity to MacDonald and saucy Myrna Loy. It also brings forth more Rodgers and Hart goodies: the classic “Lover” (a great romantic waltz played here as a lark), “Mimi,” and the title song. Rouben Mamoulian directed, in the full stride of his early-sound creativity (this was just after his Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde), using a variety of effects that look positively New Wave. Chevalier and MacDonald are a delight together (by all means see them in The Love Parade and One Hour with You, too), and Charlie Butterworth has some glorious moments as a prospective MacDonald suitor. Also worth the price of admission: the spectacle of crusty character actor C. Aubrey Smith singing. –Robert Horton

In 1986, Federico Fellini’s satiric take on television vulgarianism might have been considered, well, Fellini-esqu. Today, the grotesqu commercials and insipid game shows he depicts pale next to reality. Billed in their heyday as Ginger & Fred, Ameilia (Giulietta Masina) and Pippo (Marcello Mastroianni) are reunited after 30 years to perform their Rogers-Astaire ballroom dance tribute act on We Are Proud to Present, a television variety show. Amelia is now a widowed grandmother. Pippo has gone somewhat to seed. Can they recapture the magic amidst this surreal circus of transvestites, midgets, and a Ronald Reagan impersonator? Ginger & Fred works best when Amelia and Pippo’s bittersweet reunion is center stage, thanks to the impeccable charm and grace of Masina (La Strada) and the incomparable Mastroianni (La Dolce Vita), two actors most closely associated with the director. Ginger & Fred is as much a tribute to artists (”benefactors of humanity,” someone notes at one point) as it is to the ephemeral state of cinema itself. “We are phantoms,” Pippo tells his partner. “We arise from the darkness and disappear again.” Like Pippo, Fellini makes a few missteps, but Ginger & Fred is ultimately quite moving (”Bravo,” a fan congratulates Amelia. “You made me cry.”), with an unforgettable train station finale. Fellini made only two more films, but Ginger & Fred would have made a fitting swan song. –Donald Liebenson

With a deft balance of rugged action and richly drawn characters, Johnson County War captures the essence–if not the precise historical details–of the range wars that raged between Wyoming homesteaders and cattle barons in the early 1890s. Fighting for the legal settlers are the Hammett brothers Cain, Harry, and Dale (Tom Berenger, Luke Perry, Adam Storke), along with Dale’s tough-as-leather wife (Michelle Forbes) and an ill-fated whore (Rachel Ward) who stands proudly against the hired gun (Burt Reynolds) who terrorizes the region for his cowardly British employers. Reynolds is too contemporary for his role, but he’s a dapper villain surrounded by stooges you’ll truly love to hate, and Berenger leads the excellent cast with an outstanding, lived-in performance. An actor and veteran stuntman, director David S. Cass Sr. capably serves the original script by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, bringing workmanlike intensity to several exciting chases and showdowns, all beautifully filmed by ace cinematographer Doug Milsome. –Jeff Shannon
